- Description: Trams, tiles and the quiet streets above Alfama — a slow long weekend in a city that rewards walking uphill.

I went to Lisbon with a short list and a long weekend, and abandoned the list on the first morning. The city does not reward efficiency. It rewards the person who takes the wrong tram on purpose.

## Day one: Alfama

The old quarter is a staircase with houses attached. You climb, you stop, you realise you have been standing in the same patch of light for ten minutes watching someone hang washing from a third-floor window. Nobody is in a hurry, including the cats.

Tiles, shutters and afternoon light — the three things I photographed most.

The tiles are everywhere and never the same twice: facades, doorways, the lower half of a bakery. After a while you stop looking at them as decoration and start reading them as handwriting.

> A city is a long conversation between the people who made it and the people who are still climbing its stairs.

## Day two: the other side of the river

Across the water the pace changes. There is more air, and the light is flatter and kinder. I took the ferry at midday, ate grilled fish at a table barely bigger than the plate, and spent the afternoon doing nothing at all with great seriousness.

Late light through the shutters of a rented room.

## Day three: leaving slowly

On the last morning I walked back up through the same streets in the opposite direction and found they were different streets. This is the great secret of hills: they have two cities, and you only meet the second one on the way down.

### If you go

- Wear shoes you do not love. The cobbles are polished and unforgiving.
- Take the slow tram, not the famous one.
- Eat late. Nothing good happens before nine.
