There is an hour, usually around four in late summer, when the sea stops being a place and becomes a light. I have tried to photograph it and failed every time; the camera keeps insisting on the water.

What you see, if you sit long enough, is a road of small gold marks leading from the horizon to your feet, and the sense that if you walked down it nothing would object.

I do not have a lesson to attach to this. It is just good to know it is there, going on, whether or not anyone is watching.
